I am currently reading Pagan Christianity by Frank Viola and George Barna. Totally fascinating!!!...and an eye-opener!!!

http://www.christianbook.com/pagan-christianity-exploring-roots-church-practices/frank-viola/9781414314853/pd/314853?item_code=WW&netp_id=485181&event=ESRCN&view=details

Product Description

Many Christians take for granted that their Sunday morning worship service is rooted in the New Testament, but why does the church in the New Testament seem very different from our own expressions of corporate worship? Frank Viola and George Barna come to the startling conclusion that most of what Christians do in church is rooted more in pagan culture than in the New Testament.

Discover how many church customs really originated. This thought-provoking exploration into the background of how believers have worshiped for centuries uncovers many non-Christian roots. From the order of worship to the pastor's sermon, traditional dress codes to Christian education, Viola and Barna take a revealing look at Sunday morning. 304 pages, hardcover from Barna Books.

Frank Viola is an influential voice in the contemporary house church movement. Frank is a nationally recognized export on new trends in the church, holds conferences on the deeper Christian life, and is actively engaged in planting New Testament styles churches.

George Barna is the chairman of Good News Holdings, a multimedia firm in Los Angeles that produces Movies, television programming, and other media content. He is also the founder and directing leader of the Barna Group, a research and resource firm in Ventura California. He has been hailed as "the most often quoted person in the Christian Church today" and is counted among its most influential leaders.

Normally, I don't read this sort of thing, but the county director of our denomination recommended it to the pastors and preachers he mentors.

I finally bought this book. I was very disapointed. I thought it would have a lot more info. Like making the sign of the cross that was once a sigh for a goddess whoes name starts with the letter T.

If the author had decided to address blue jeans in church:

Bob was heading to Church again, blah blah blah blah... the Bible doesn't say anyone wore jeans... blah blah blah blah... he noticed it was a sunny day and thought about the jeans he was wearing... blah blah blah... many people don't know this isn't in the Bible... blah blah blah... [30 pages later]... "Why Sunday?"...

Of course, it's dressing up the book talks about, with pages and pages of meaningless fluff.

Johnswife, the sign of the cross is mentioned just in passing, with no indication of its origin. If I hadn't already dismissed the book as total garbage, I would have wondered why it mentioned it at all, if it wasn't going to say anything about it.

I've not read this book but another by Viola. . . can't remember the title offhand and am not willing to run up to the library to search it out.

I am in agreement with much that Viola says. I believe the model of church that we have been traditionally following is not biblical and has led to a spectator church of weakling babes. When one man is elevated as 'the man with the relationship with God', others are willing to sit back.

In our church there is a brief time of sharing where others can speak but it is not consistent and it is not much of the time spent together and it seems to be done as a 'isn't this nice of us to let you share' time rather than from the understanding that this is what church is. Acts 2:42 makes clear what church fellowship is about. And I Cor 12 & 14 expounds on the gifts God has given for His church to build itself up, yet most churches don't allow and discourage the use of gifts. Oh, they'll let the women bake and serve food. They'll let you go on a mission trip or teach the children. But the true ministry of the Spirit is lacking and threatening.

Nobody wore jeans in the bible because jeans hadn't been invented yet.

There is a great book, worship old and new, which has been through at least two printings and an update.

It traces the biblical forms of worship and how they are represented in different church models - and this is an excellent read.

I find reviewing material by people who are just waking up to the idea that there are reasons why our worship is styled a certain way is humorous.

The modern church has rejected out of hand much true biblical reasons and forms in our designing worship to fit our "modern" needs.

This doesn't mean any one particular mode of worship is necessarily best, the author concludes, but that the elements of true worship need to be present for us to maintain continuity with the Bible and the faithful in our history as Children of God.

I agree.
