When I use the trackpad on my laptop lately, sometimes the cursor sticks! I try to move it and it just stays there. If I run my finger over the trackpad really fast, then it will be okay. What could be making this happen and what can I do about it? I love my MAC but this is weird. I've tried restarting my computer thinking that will clear it up but it doesn't work for long. It's frustrating to be in the middle of doing something and not be able to move the cursor for a few seconds or more.

Gail,

Don't dispair, we'll get that fixed right away.

Go to versiontracker.com and download Onyx. Once installed, run Onyx and select the Automation Tab. Check all the boxes. Then let Onyx fix everything. Reboot the Mac.

That will probably take care of your trackpad issue. If not, post back here and we'll do something else.

Blessings!

George

I downloaded Onyx and it took me a while to find it. When I downloaded it, a Leopard w/snow on it appeared. My version is 10.5.8, not snow leopard. I got an error message when I tried to open it. Was there another version of it? I had to search through a few pages because it didn't come up on the first page so I entered the word Onyx and that was what came up.

Sorry, I'm so used to everyone having Snow Leopard that I didn't stop to think.

You can get the final Leopard and earlier versions direct from the developers site at http://www.titanium.free.fr/download.php?sid=ac64dc989113bcfe773e0d45bd337e67

Thank you so much for sending me this. I am doing git right now although all the stuff you told me to do is not on this version. I hope it works. Will let you know. So far everything seems to be good and I'm not having this problem. My nephew will be excited. He was complaining about it too.

It was okay for a while and I thought it was fixed but it started up again. I tried to clean and check every box like you said, and it took a while but it's done. Now let's see how long it lasts.

Thanks again for the link. I will send it on to my sister who also has a MAC. She might not have heard of it before.

More help:

Make sure your trackpad drivers, etc, are up to date. Click on  Software Update and let your Apple update your Mac.

Next, reset your PRAM as follows:

Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
Release the keys.

Still more ideas if the problem persists. Let us know!

It started up again but only for a second. Weird, huh? I'll try what you said this time and see how it works. It's been fine every since that second of stalling.

My sister says my space bar doesn't work right. She says she has to double click on stuff to get it to work, unlike hers which is really easy. I didn't think there was a problem until she convinced me. Her MAC is about 4 or 5 years old maybe. I'm not sure. The day after she said it I had myself convinced there was a problem and then the more I used it, the more I realized there was no problem, maybe the problem is with hers and she convinced me there was a problem. I'm trying to remember the last time I used her computer but if I remember correctly, her space bar was really loose compared to mine but hers seemed off, not mine. She asked me if mine has always been like that. I'm not sure. Like I say, maybe she pounds on hers. I don't. I don't see a problem. She says maybe some dirt or dust got into both and I should really have it cleaned.

You might try blowing out the keyboard with a can of air. Sometimes it is amazing what a single hair will do to a keyboard.

If it is hardware failure at six months it should be under warranty.

PGAGA is correct about debris under the keys. I've seen a sesame seed totally disable a key function. However, I doubt that is your situation. Trackpads and right and left click bars have changed over the various Mac models. I wouldn't expect yours to perform like your sister's. Read your owners manual for a description of exactly how your equipment should work.

It sounds to me as if you're somewhat uncertain about your Mac. One doesn't double click a Space Bar, so you must be talking about something else. I think you should get some face to face help with it. Go to your local Apple Store and they will help you. If you don't have a local Mac Store, find a local computer club and contact a Mac user there. Most Mac users are happy to help others.

This doesn't mean that I've given up on you. Post back with specific issues and I will do whatever I can to help from a distance.

I used my canned air on the computer and I will continue to use it. I even forgot I had it. Dummy me. Now I notice that when I get a recipe from Food Network, and I copy and paste to send it to my Christian Homemakers group, my cursor totally freezes. It doesn't seem to do it anywhere else. Could it be something in their e-mail's?

Also, when I try to straighten out a lot of things on my computer w/the program you sent me, they don't straighten out. Like for instance, it says that something says f-f-f and it should say f-c. Do you get what I am trying to say? I clicked on the repair button and it came out saying it was still f-f-f. It didn't repair anything. I can do it on my own, one line at a time and I have to wait like 5 min. for each to repair but them sometimes I forget I have it on and don't do it for a while. I have so many of those on my computer and it will take me forever to do them one at a time. Do they need to be done? Do you know what I am talking about? I don't know what they are called. Does that cause problems w/your computer if they aren't fixed?

Gail, I honestly don't have the faintest idea what you're talking about. You really need some face time with a Mac person who can actually see the problem. I'm sorry, but your description doesn't make any sense to me at all.

This is what it says under Disc First Aid - 111.8 GB Hitachi HTSB4 -Repair disc permission - Permission differ on "Library/Internet Plug-In/Java Plug In Cocoa.bundle/Contents/Code resources" should be -rw-rw-r -they are Irw-rw-r. That's what I meant. There are at least 30 of these. They don't all say the same thing but some little thing is off. When I tried to fix it, it didn't seem to fix it. That's what I meant.

DON'T TOUCH THOSE.

Take this to the Apple store - it's still under warranty.
