I have a 1998 Dodge Grand Caravan, that I absolutely love. It's right at 177K miles. I noticed months ago that it was overheating so I took it in and had the radiator replaced. Later had the temperature sensor replaced too. However, it is still overheating. Generally when I am stopped idle like at a stop light is when it starts to run hot. If I turn the heater on full blast (wonderful for a 96 degree day), the temperature will go down. I understand how it works, mind you. What I don't get is how it is still overheating. Not only that but on occasion when I am stopped at stop lights, I will notice that the oil light comes on with the annoying little ding, ding, ding, but once I go again it shuts off. I check the oil and the level is just fine. I am not due for my next oil change for another 1000 miles. I am thinking my van is allergic to stop lights..lol. If anyone has any insight on these issues, I would really appreciate it. Thank you in advance.

I'd take it to somewhere where they could run a diagnostic on it, just to check out everything. We had a 1995 Dodge Caravan - and will likely never own another. We replaced the transmission twice and later found out that the original owner replaced it once as well! I was NOT happy! Mine was doing much of the same things yours is doing. Blessings, Garsy

Sounds like the radiator fan is not turning on when it is supossed to (like when you are stopped and idling in traffic). The fan helps to dissipate heat from the radiator and coolant system, which is why the engine will cool when you turn on the heater fan. Could be a simple as a bad radiator fan relay switch. Take it in for service. Should be a fairly cheap repair.

homebild is likely correct, hubby just replaced the relay in our '98 Caravan today, and that's exactly what it was doing. I think the part was $39 and some change at autozone, and it took him less than fifteen minutes to change it out. If you know ANYBODY that is handy with cars, they can replace it for you (just have them google the problem and get exact instructions) without having to pay an absurd fee to a car shop.

Great thank you guys. Homebild, is that exact name for the part Radiator Fan Relay Switch? If so I will go pick up the thing myself. I am just tired of it overheating on me. Also, any ideas on the oil light coming on when I am at a stop light, then it goes off when I start driving again? That one is so weird, as my oil is just fine. Thank you guys. S

Radiator cooling fan relay is the part you need. Hubby is not sure about the oil light thing.

S That may be a bigger problem then the water temp. It might be the oil pump going out, not producing enough pressure at the low rpm's but enough at higher speeds to extinguish the light. Find a mechanic soon to do an oil pressure check at different rpm's. Without enough oil being pushed through all the little passageways in the engine part of it will be running dry and that WILL cause failure.
